They are hard because they happen again.

What if those decisions only had to be made once?
Every repeated decision is a design opportunity.
These marks are one answer. A personal operating system, written in symbols. Each mark holds a decision made in advance. When the situation appears, the thinking is already finished.
THE IDEA
Each mark holds a rule, written in a calm moment and assigned to a situation that repeats.
Instead of asking what to do, the answer already exists.
WHY SYMBOLS
A symbol is faster than a sentence. It carries a whole rule in one shape, and reading it takes no effort. A mark seen every day also collects its own history: each time it worked, each moment it was needed. Words explain. Symbols recall.
WHY TATTOOS
Not for permanence. For visibility. A rule in a notebook can be skipped. A rule on skin gets read every day, whether it is convenient or not. These happen to be tattoos because the rules needed to live somewhere they could not be ignored.
THE COLLECTION AS A SYSTEM
The marks follow shared rules of their own. One stroke weight. Shared heights, shared angles, rounded ends. A new mark can join the set and belong the moment it is drawn.
DESIGNING THE SELF
So much design goes into changing software. Almost none goes into changing ourselves.
Can behavior be designed on purpose?
Can a symbol work like an interface?
Can a body be a design surface?
Can a decision be reusable?
These marks are one set of answers. The tattoos are one implementation. The idea exists independently of them.
YOUR OWN SYSTEM
Picture someone a few years from now saying, I built my own operating system.
Someone building a system for recovery.
Someone else for fatherhood.
Someone else for leadership.
Someone for chronic illness.
Someone for anxiety.
None of the symbols would match.
All of the architecture would.
A collection of tattoos is only the surface. Underneath is an attempt to design a reusable architecture for making decisions. Design, not as the making of objects, but as the making of ways of being.
